Do Your Characters Dream? ... On Page 1?

I'm looking for some great advice and I know it's out there!

I am working on a romance novel. I wanted the story to start with a dream that one of the two main characters was experiencing. I remember reading, however, that you should NEVER start a novel with a dream.

Why?

I was told that in the first few pages of a novel, the reader doesn't know or care about the characters yet and therefore would not care about the character's dream.

Hmmm.

I thought if the reader doesn't care about my character or my character's dream yet, what difference would it make if I start with a dream-scene?

So, what do you think? Start with a dream? or don't start with a dream?
